STATEMENT

My landscapes do not represent any actual spaces; rather they are fictional places that suggest feelings of serenity, peacefulness, and solitude.  I consider them to be ethereal scenes and visual sanctuaries.  My foremost inspiration comes from my need and reliance on a kind and peaceful spirituality, which is not to be confused with any religion.  I use the subject of landscapes because I interpret the view of a chosen landscape to be something sanctified and magical - soothing but enigmatic.  It is by the use of abundant, physical texture and countless layers of translucent pigment that these images are built up to create an illustration that appears to be weathered, organic and enchanting.

PROCESS

To ensure longevity, I use Golden and Liquitex professional brands of glazes, pigments, and pastes.  I begin the process with a modeling paste, layering it until the desired surface texture is reached; lastly indicating a horizon line.  I then proceed with the initial opaque under-painting.  It is then in the addition and reduction of countless layers of transparent glazes that I build up and assemble the image.  I spend a lot of time stepping back; examining and “listening” to the work in progress, letting it dictate what I should do next.

Beginning in 2007, I began to allow the paste to build up over the edges of the canvas giving the work an unrefined border, creating the look of something perhaps chipped away from its former space.

NOTE:  After much consideration and experimentation I've made a conscious decision not to varnish my work as it ultimately detracts from the organic look and texture.  Therefore, the painted surface remains exposed to the elements.
